Forged vs Cast Wheels

If you’re shopping for aftermarket wheels, you’ve probably seen “forged” and “cast” thrown around. The difference matters for strength, weight, fitment and price. Here’s how they compare — and why RimWorks focuses on forged.

What are cast wheels?

Cast wheels are made by pouring molten aluminum into a mold. Once it cools, the wheel is machined into its final shape. Casting is fast and cheap, which is why most factory and budget aftermarket wheels use it.

The downside is porosity: tiny air pockets can form in the metal during cooling. That makes cast wheels heavier and more brittle under hard impacts. For daily driving they’re fine; for aggressive fitments, track use or large diameters, they’re a compromise.

What are forged wheels?

Forged wheels start as a solid cylinder of aluminum — usually 6061-T6 — that is compressed under extreme pressure into a rough wheel shape. That pressure realigns the grain structure of the metal, making it denser, stronger and more consistent.

After forging, the wheel is CNC machined to exact specs. Because the material is stronger, less metal is needed, so forged wheels are typically lighter than cast wheels of the same size. Less unsprung weight means better acceleration, braking and suspension response.
